How do affirmations work? When I say an affirmation, everything in my mind that argues against it comes up and parades mockingly before me. I call these arguments against the declared good “debris.” The brain automatically brings up opposites. If you say “light,” it says “dark.” It helps affirmations work like a mental roto-rooter.
Where does the debris come from? Somebody in my past said it. It had such a strong impact, I kept it as part of my operating system. It is not true. If it is not helpful right now, I can admit that it outlived its usefulness and release it and repeat the affirmation. That process continues until all the debris is dismissed and only the affirmation remains.
Refresh your mind
Here are some affirmations to use. Take one at a time. Read it to yourself. Post it on colorful sticky notes so you see it often through the day.
Feelings add enjoyment, vitality, and energy to my life today and every day.
The limitless Divine Presence in every cell in my body recreates my body in Spirit’s original idea of my wholeness.
Just as Spirit appears in the radiant abundance of the season, my needs are met, my wants satisfied.
I remain heart-centered, radiating the Love of Spirit to all around me.
Since I am open and receptive to Spirit’s guidance, I move forward with confidence.
I receive money from unexpected sources.
The peace of God in me is contagious.
Wisdom plus kindness and gentleness triumphs.
I attract gifted supporters who thrive on my team.
So great is the generosity of Spirit that I give lavishly from the overflow.
Journal about what each one brings forth and why the debris is no longer true. You might need to stay with one of them longer than one day. Give yourself plenty of time to let go of all the debris associated with it. When only the affirmation remains, express your gratitude for the clarity it brings.
What changes in your life?
Notice what changes in your life after only the affirmation remains. The result of your affirmation can show up as new opportunities. Notice these and confidently take them. That’s how an affirmation changes your life.
Name the new possibilities that arise in your journal. Tell what happens when you take advantage of them. Express gratitude as your blessings increase.
Thoughts are creative
When you use this practice, you experience how your affirmation creates something new in your life. The debris created the reality you had in the past. Once you release the debris, only the affirmation remains to create something better.
People say. “Change our thinking, change your life.” Using affirmations as described here is one way to do that.
